June Gorton Summer Tournament, Tuesday 20 June

Twelve players took part in this year's June Gorton tournament. A smaller entry than in recent years, perhaps due to the 30°C temperature outside, though the high ceiling and open windows of the Upper Vestry House enabled us to keep the playing conditions comfortable. The tournament was won by Justinas Stojanas, 4/5, with Mihai Ionut Deaconu, Roman Ismailov and Tony Packham tieing for 2nd-4th on 3/5. Levi Weston demonstrated his continuing improvement, winning the U-130 grading prize with 2/5. Congratulations to Justinas, who will be presented with the June Gorton Trophy at the Autumn General Meeting.

London Public Service Chess League Team Blitz, Thursday 18 May 2017

GLCC had a successful LPSCL team blitz tournament this year. With one round to go GLCC needed to win 4-0 against Pimlico 1 to tie for first place. Well done to our team of Justinas Stojanas, Robin Haldane (guest player from UNATS), Douglas Hogan and Tony Packham, for duly scoring the required 4-0 to share the Barford Trophy with Met Police.

In the U-150 section our team of Peter Morton, Krzysztof Kapiciak, Delroy Bennett and Rafael Caballero finished with 4/9. Well done to Krzysztof in particular for scoring an impressive 8/9. Photos below: left, GLCC 1 in their last round match with Pimlico; right, Team captains Martin Benjamin (Met Police) and Tony Packham (GLCC) share the Barford Trophy. Full list of team standings.

Martin Trophy 2016-17

The Martin Trophy is awarded for the best individual performance in inter-club matches over the season (July 2016 - June 2017). Players must play at least ten games in league, cup or friendly matches for their score to count. Statistics are calculated for everyone who has played a match for the club. Below are final top ten standings. Congratulations to Andriy Peykov on winning the Martin Trophy with a superb 81% score over 24 games.

  Player Score Percentage
1 Andriy Peykov 19/24 81
2 Tony Packham 17/26 65
3 Douglas Hogan 9/14 64
4 Nigel Blades 9/14 64
5 Peter Morton 10/16 63
6 Jason Rihel 9/17 56

8 Justinas Stojanas 6/12 50
9 Roman Ismailov 9/20 48

10

Iulian Tuchilus 5/11 45

Where players have identical percentage scores the first tie break is "most games played" and the second tie break is "average grade of opponents minus player's own grade". Thank you to Derek Hadley for calculating the Martin Trophy statistics.

Club Champion's Simultaneous Display

Club Champion Nigel Blades took on seventeen opponents in this year's simul. Play continued to just after 10pm, when six games had to be decided by adjudication. Overall Nigel won eleven, drew two and lost four. Ruy D'Orey and Andriy Peykov played particularly good games against Nigel. Ruy accurately exploited an advantage from early in the game to win a knight in the endgame. Andriy played an aggressive Benoni formation and the game became very tactical early on, with chances for both players. In a queenless middlegame with four active knights on the board, Andriy's pressure led to Nigel succumbing to a knight fork. It was difficult to chose between these two games, but it was decided to award the McGovern Trophy to the lower graded Ruy for his accurate play and resourceful trapping of Nigel's knight without any compensation in the endgame. Sixteen players took part in our annual Shapson 10 second-a-move Lightning Tournament. We were pleased to be joined by guest players GM Matthew Sadler and WIM Natasha Regan, authors of Chess for Life, which was recently shortlisted for ECF Book of the Year. As the highest graded player on the current ECF list, it was not surprising that Matthew won with a clean 7/7. Michael Brown and Roman Ismailov tied for 2nd place on 5/7. As the highest placed club member, Roman wins the Shapson Trophy for the second year running.
