Club Competitions

 

Club Championship 2023-24

All games to be completed by 30 June 2024. Rate of play: 60 minutes + 30 second increment per move, 75 minutes + 15 second increment by mutual agreement, or if incrementing clocks not available, 30 moves in 75 minutes + 15 minutes quickplay finish. Starting numbers have been determined by random draw. The Trophy in each section will be awarded to the player with the highest point score. Please note that points scored against players completing fewer than half their games are ineligble for determining placings, though all games played will be rated. In case of a tie, the Sonneborn-Berger system will be used for tiebreaking.

Ratings are taken from the November 2023 ECF list. Player numbers has been drawn randomly. Colours for each game denoted 'w' or 'b'.

GLCC LMS Tournament

Aim: to give club members the chance to play regular, ECF-rated games.

The GLCC League Management System (LMS) Tournament is free to enter for all GLCC members who have a current ECF membership. Lapsed ECF memberships will be required to be renewed. If you'd like to enter the tournament, please email Tyrone Jefferies, tournament organiser.

Competition rules

  • Ratings limit is U-1600
  • Games will be played every Tuesday evening at St George’s starting at 18.30. Close of play will be 21.45
  • Time control will be G60+30s
  • All moves are required to be recorded throughout the game

If you happen to be selected to play for a team, you won’t be paired for that particular Tuesday. If you are unable to visit the club on Tuesday, please let Tyrone know, and he won’t pair you for that particular Tuesday. You will be automatically paired for the following week unless you are selected for a team, or you have alternative commitments.

Players without an opponent in the draw will probably be paired to play either Delroy Bennett or Tyrone Jefferies - therefore everyone is guaranteed to play a rated game. Results should be reported promptly to Tyrone. Games will be automatically rated and will be included on the next ECF ratings update the following week. Second round games will be played with colours reversed.

Martin Trophy 2023-24

The Martin Trophy is awarded for the best individual performance in inter-club matches over the season (July 2023 - June 2024). Players must play at least ten games in league, cup or friendly matches for their score to count. Statistics are calculated for everyone who has played a match for the club. Thank you to Derek Hadley for calculating the Martin Trophy standings.

GLCC / LPSCL Blitz, Tuesday 9 January 2024

Sixteen players took part in this 9-round tournament, played at 3 minutes + 2 second increments.

1st = Thomas Bonn and Edmund Andal, 8½/9

The Peter Bond Trophy for best score by a LPSCL player was awarded to Robin Haldane (UNATS), 6/9
The Roland Smith Trophy for best score by a LPSCL player rated U-1825 was awarded to Leonardo Gupta (GLCC), 6/9.

The tournament was controlled by Nigel Blades. Thank you to Tyrone Jefferies and Tony Packham for help setting up and putting away. Thank you to all the players who put away pieces and helped stack the chairs and tables at end of the evening.

Christmas 2-12 Tournament, Tuesday 19 December

Shapson Trophy Lightning Tournament, Tuesday 5 September 2023

Traditional 10 seconds per move Lightning Tournament, single section all-play-all or Swiss, depending on entries, start 6.45pm. Open to all players; entry fees: £5 for GLCC members, £10 for non-members. Please arrive by 6.30pm and pay the entry fee either by cash or online using the Paypal buttons below. 40% of entry fees returned as prizes, remainder to club funds. GLCC Summer Rapidplay, Saturday 19 August 2023

A record 52 players took part in our annual summer rapidplay tournament. The prize winners were:

Open: 1st Eldar Alizada 4½/5, 2nd= Gary Senior and Ruairi Isaacs 3½/5. Full results and crosstable

June Gorton Summer Tournament, Tuesday 20 June 2023

Seventeen players took part in this 5-round club rapidplay. Congratulations to Roman Ismailov on winning the tournament with 4.5/5.

Bush Time Handicap Tournament, Tuesday 21 March 2023

Twenty-one players took part in this 5-round Swiss tournament with 30 minutes for games, time allocated to each player according to rating difference. This is a great leveller and Delroy Bennett (rated 1263) led all the way in an exciting tournament, until the final round when he was defeated by upcoming player George Cooper. Four players finished on 4/5 with George winning on tiebreak. Congratulations to George, who will hold the Bush Trophy for one year, to be presented at the club's autumn general meeting in September. Informal Club Rapidplay Tournament, Tuesday 22 November

Autumn FIDE rated Blitz Tournament, Tuesday 27 September 2022

Thirty-eight players took part in our first open blitz tournament since before Covid, which incorporated the LPSCL individual blitz championships.

Open: 1st Thomas Bonn 9/10, 2nd Antanas Zapolskis 7½/10. U-1825: 1st Viktor Atansov 9½/10, 2nd= Jack Virgin and Christopher Levy 8/10.

In the Open GLCC member Antanas Zapolskis won the Peter Bond Trophy as the highest placed player from a LPSCL club and Tony Packham won the Roland Smith Trophy in the U-1825 section. Crosstable and full results available for the Open and U-1825 sections.

The 2022 Club Champion's Simultaneous Display

Although there was a smaller turn-out for the prizegiving, the simul was very well attended with 15 players this year. The average strength of opposition was higher than usual and Jason did well to score 9.5/15. The McGovern Trophy for the best game played against Jason was awarded to Roger Clarkson for his successful sacrificial attack against Jason's king. The well-played win by Maya Tadmor was also commended.

Martin Trophy 2021-22

The Martin Trophy is awarded for the best individual performance in inter-club matches over the season (July 2021 - June 2022). Players must play at least ten games in league, cup or friendly matches for their score to count. Statistics are calculated for everyone who has played a match for the club. Club Championship Tournaments 2021-22

All games to be completed by 30 June 2022. Rate of play: 75 minutes + 15 second increment per move, or if incrementing clocks not available, 30 moves in 75 minutes + 15 minutes quickplay finish. Starting numbers have been determined by random draw. The Trophy in each section will be awarded to the player with the highest point score. Please note that points scored against players completing fewer than half their games are ineligble for detemining placings, though all games played will be rated. In case of a tie, the Sonneborn-Berger system will be used for tiebreaking.
