Club Champion's Simultaneous Display

Tim scored 11/15 in this year's simul, losing only one game to new member Lucas Grisoni, who was awarded the McGovern Trophy. Lucas played positively through the game and prevented Tim from castling his king to safety, obliging Tim to give up the exchange. Lucas pressed home his advantage convincingly to win. Maxime Viallet and Ruy D'Orey also had good games against Tim with winning chances, though both games ended in draws. Prize for the craziest tactical game should go to Jason Rihel, with pieces en prise left, right and centre. The game ended in an amicable draw by perpetual check.

Club Champion's Simultaneous Display

Roman Ismailov, GLCC Club Champion for the first time, gave the most convincing simultaneous display of recent years, scoring 12-0! It is believed to be the first time the Club Champion has achieved 100% in the annual simul. Jeno Nagy and Harry Peng were both commended by club president Tim Pelling for their games against Roman, which were the last to finish. Jeno put up stiff opposition in an endgame where he had queen and rook against queen and two minor pieces, succumbing in the end to a neat combination that either won his queen or forced checkmate. Harry had a good double rook endgame against Roman and was on the offensive with his rooks attacking Roman's weak pawns and his king well centralised. Harry missed a winning chance based on moving his king further up the board; and a later drawing chance where he could have won Roman's outside passed pawn. The game simplified to a king and pawn endgame where Roman had calculated accurately that his h and d-passed pawns could not both be prevented from queening. In a close decision, the McGovern Trophy was awarded to Harry Peng.
