Club Competitions

 

Club Championship 2024-25

  • Open to all club members
  • Entry fee £6
  • ECF-rated competition in three sections for the Bernfield, Foley and Ashelford Club Championship Trophies
  • Flexible format, typically 5-7 rated games over the season, play your games when it suits you

Now open for entries - full information, entry form and online payment link available at the club championships page.

The tournaments start from November 2024. All games to be completed by 30 June 2025. Rate of play: 75 minutes + 15 second increment or by mutual agreement 60 minutes + 30 second increment per move. If incrementing clocks not available, 30 moves in 75 minutes + 15 minutes quickplay finish. Starting numbers have been determined by random draw. The Trophy in each section will be awarded to the player with the highest point score. Please note that points scored against players completing fewer than half their games are ineligble for determining placings, though all games played will be rated. In case of a tie, the Sonneborn-Berger system will be used for tiebreaking.

Ratings are taken from the November 2024 ECF list. Player numbers has been drawn randomly. Colours for each game denoted 'w' or 'b'.

GLCC LMS Tournament

Aim: to give club members the chance to play regular, ECF-rated games.

The GLCC League Management System (LMS) Tournament is free to enter for all GLCC members who have a current ECF membership. If you'd like to enter the tournament, please email John Lascelles tournament organiser.

Competition rules

  • Open to all club members
  • Games will be played every Tuesday evening at St George’s starting at 18.30.
  • Players will need to let the tournament controller know in advance if they would like to be included in the round draw each week.
  • Time control will be G75+15s (optionally G60+30s)
  • All moves are required to be recorded throughout the game, FIDE Laws of Chess apply.

If you happen to be selected to play for a team, you won’t be paired for that particular Tuesday. If you are unable to visit the club on Tuesday, please let John know, and he won’t pair you for that particular Tuesday. You will be automatically paired for the following week unless you are selected for a team, or you have alternative commitments.

Results should be reported promptly to John. Games will be automatically rated and will be included on the next ECF ratings update the following week. Second round games will be played with colours reversed.

Martin Trophy 2024-25

The Martin Trophy is awarded for the best individual performance in inter-club matches over the season (July 2024 - June 2025). Players must play at least ten games in league, cup or friendly matches for their score to count. Statistics are calculated for everyone who has played a match for the club. Thank you to Derek Hadley for calculating the Martin Trophy standings.

2024 Club Champion's Simultaneous Display

The simul was well attended with 14 players taking part. Play commenced at 7.00pm and continued for over three and a half hours. Congratulations to Jason who scored 9½/14 against a stronger field than usual, with two previous club champions taking part. Congratulations too to Dmitry, Giuseppe and Jamie for their wins agains Jason. The McGovern Trophy for the best game played was awarded to Giuseppe Naglieri for his win.

Shapson Trophy Lightning Tournament, Tuesday 10 September 2024

Traditional 10 seconds per move Lightning Tournament, single section all-play-all or Swiss, depending on entries, start 6.45pm. Open to all players; entry fees: £5 for GLCC members, £10 for non-members. Please arrive by 6.30pm and pay the entry fee either by cash or online using the Paypal buttons below. 40% of entry fees returned as prizes, remainder to club funds. Keith Hylands

We are sorry to report the death of long time club member Keith Hylands, in Watford General hospital on 5 July, after a period of illness. June Gorton Summer Tournament, Tuesday 18 June 2024

Twenty-one players took part in this 5-round rapidplay, 15 minutes per player per game. The June Gorton Trophy was awarded to Nigel Blades, as the highest-placed GLCC player, on tiebreak. GLCC / LPSCL Blitz, Tuesday 9 January 2024

Sixteen players took part in this 9-round tournament, played at 3 minutes + 2 second increments.

1st = Thomas Bonn and Edmund Andal, 8½/9

The Peter Bond Trophy for best score by a LPSCL player was awarded to Robin Haldane (UNATS), 6/9
The Roland Smith Trophy for best score by a LPSCL player rated U-1825 was awarded to Leonardo Gupta (GLCC), 6/9.

The tournament was controlled by Nigel Blades. Thank you to Tyrone Jefferies and Tony Packham for help setting up and putting away. Thank you to all the players who put away pieces and helped stack the chairs and tables at end of the evening.

Christmas 2-12 Tournament, Tuesday 19 December

Thirteen players took part in the tournament, which was won jointly by James Robinson and Ian Simpson, who each received a book token prize. Full details below. Thank you to Tyrone Jefferies for running the tournament.
